JANUARY 2002

SHAWS FEMALE * 6 YEARS 3 MONTHS

Location: N WESTERN CHARLESTON (west of the Sand River)

(1sighting) The single confirmed sighting of the Shaws Female was on western Charleston, west of the Sand River. It appears as if the Shaws Female has given up on any designs to occupy the territory to the east of hers, east of the Sand River; that land vacated by the old Chellahanga Female. This would be good news for the daughter of the Kapen Female.

DECEMBER 2001

SHAWS FEMALE * 6 YEARS 2 MONTHS

Location: N WESTERN CHARLESTON (west of the Sand River)

(2 sightings this month)
The Shaws Female was seen at least twice this month. On both occasions she was on the hunt, but was not seen to catch anything. There was no report of her lactating.

NOVEMBER 2001

SHAWS FEMALE * 6 YEARS 1 MONTH

Location: N WESTERN CHARLESTON (west of the Sand River)

(1 probable sighting this month)
The single sighting of what was probably the Shaws Female was of the leopard drinking from a puddle in the road.

OCTOBER 2001

SHAWS FEMALE * 6 YEARS

Location: N WESTERN CHARLESTON (west of the Sand River)

(2 probable sightings this month)
The Shaws Female did not seem to be quite as active in the region of western Charleston as was the case last month. Perhaps other female leopards have moved in to ward her advances off.

SEPTEMBER 2001

SHAWS FEMALE * 5 YEARS 11 MONTHS

Location: N WESTERN CHARLESTON (west of the Sand River)

(5 probable sightings this month)
A female leopard - the same in each case - and almost certainly the Shaws Female, was seen on several occasions this month, all around the Sand River of NW Charleston. It is almost certain that the disappearance of the Chellahanga Female has caused others such as her, the Toulon Female and the Kapen Female to move in to see if they could perhaps get some of the valuable river frontage for themselves. Time will tell as to how the spoils get divided, but the Kapen Female was certainly not slow in picking up on the interest of the Shaws Female and was soon in the area to investigate.

AUGUST 2001

SHAWS FEMALE * 5 YEARS 10 MONTHS

Location: SOUTH WESTERN CHARLESTON

(no confirmed sightings this month)
The Shaws Female has not been formally identified for several months now but during August there may well have been several sightings of her. If it was the Shaws Female encountered, then she was mating with a male leopard thought to control the western side of the Sand River of western Charleston. She may also be showing expansionist signs, moving to the eastern bank of the Sand River, muscling in on the territory which used to be controlled by the old Chellahanga Female. This will probably bring her into conflict with the Kapen Female.

The Shaws Female is the first daughter of the Newington Female and has established herself to the south of her mother on western Charleston, west of the Sand River. Last year she was known to have two cubs, but these were last seen at approximately a year of age. Her territory was at one stage to the north of the Selati Female, but with this latter leopard apparently having moved more west, the Shaws Female has continued slightly south and probably has the Toulon Female as her most southerly neighbour. There were at least two sightings of the Shaws Female this month. It is not known if she is pregnant again.
