November & December 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON The Toulon Female was not seen during the game report period. October 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON The Toulon Female had another quiet month viewing wise. In fact the only sighting of the Toulon Female was an unconfirmed sighting of a leopard thought to be the Toulon Female. However this old leopard and her cub are probably fine and spending much time in areas with dense bush. These leopards were more than likely much more active on the property than what this solitary sighting suggests. September 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON The single sighting of the Toulon Female indicates that all is well with this leopard. Her cub was seen twice near Charleston Rock awaiting the return of his mother to take him to another kill. These leopards seem to be spending more time in the eastern parts of Toulon and probably spent a fair amount of time in the Kruger National Park, given the presence of the Jakkalsdraai Female near Rocky Crossing. August 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (1 sighting of the female, none of them with her cub; 1 of cub without mother) The Toulon Female was sighted once during the report period, this in the very south of the reserve. Her cub was seen once on its own without its mother. The lone sighting of these animals indicates all is well with them. They were probably a lot more active in the south of the reserve than what these sightings suggest.July 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (1 sightings of the female, 0 of them with her cub; 0 of cub without mother) The ageing Toulon Female was seen just once this report period, south of Boomers Crossing. She was calling frequently, but there was no sign of her cub. One hopes that all is well with the youngster, as the Toulon Female has a very bad track record with respect to mothering, having only raised one cub to independence in the past. The low frequency of her sightings may be attributed to her spending much of her time on south-western Toulon , an area not frequently traversed by game drive vehicles. June 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (5 sightings of the female,4 of them with her cub;0 of cub without mother) The Toulon Female had an interesting month and provided some excellent viewing in the south of the reserve. At the start of the report period she was found with an impala kill, and she and her cub fed from it at their own leisure. But perhaps the most interesting sighting was of her with the Jakkalsdraai Female. The Toulon Female wandered into this leopard in an area that overlaps between these two females territory. The Toulon Female stole the kill from the Jakkalsdraai Female, and the two leopards came to blows. The Hlaralini Male arrived on the scene and chased away the two females to claim to kill, giving the Toulon cub quite a fright in the process as it disappeared as fast as possible when it saw the male. Another quality sighting was of the female chasing a porcupine, which she managed to catch on a few occasions, but could not kill, and eventually left it alone. May 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (1 sighting with her cub) The single sighting of the Toulon Female was of one of a content leopard on Toulon . Her cub was present with her and doing well. She was more active than this single sighting suggests, hunting and providing for herself and her growing cub. April 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (1 sighting) The Toulon Female was seen only once in April, without her cub. This is probably a poor reflection of her presence on the property, as she favours the south-eastern parts of Toulon , an area which is less frequently worked by game drive vehicles. This old female leopard has one of the worst track records with respect to raising cubs, having only raised one cub successfully in all her years. One hopes that all is well with her current litter. March 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (0 sightings) February 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON (3 sightings, 1 with one of her cubs) All sightings of this leopard were concentrated on eastern Toulon where she was only seen once with one of her cubs. One hopes that the other cub has survived. The three sightings of her also seemed to mirror where the Chellahanga Male and Jakkalsdraai Female had been seen mating previously in the month. Given her interaction with these two leopards during last month’s game report period it seems as though she has a keen disliking for the Jakkalsdraai Female and vigorously discourages this female from entering her territory. The Toulon Female was also seen catching an adult male impala which she no doubt cached and provided for her cub(s). January 2006 TOULON FEMALE Location: TOULON Seen once, she rudely interrupted the Chellahanga male and Jakklsdraai female leopards during mating, chasing off the other female and proceeding to court with the male herself. Strange behaviour considering she does have young cubs. MalaMala
