December 2007 WINDMILL PRIDE = 8 3 ADULT FEMALES Location: EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD The surprise of the month was the return of the Windmill Pride. These lions have been absent from MalaMala for many months and have not been seen regularly for almost a year. Three of the old adults and 5 of the cubs were seen. The cubs are now about a year old, and were not recorded the last time the Windmill Pride was seen. Their ages correspond to the length of time the pride has been absent. The older lionesses are now looking ancient. One almost certainly has TB and is looking weak and emaciated. However, the cubs are in good condition and food has obviously not been a problem for them. Hopefully this will see the return of this once often seen and revered pride to MalaMala.
November 2007 WINDMILL PRIDE = 8 6 ADULT FEMALES Location: EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD The last confirmed sighting of the Windmill pride was in June 2006. There was an unconfirmed sighting of a single lioness that may have been a windmill lioness in August 2006. It is assumed that the Windmill pride has moved off MalaMala into the KNP. They will be taken out of the monthly game report until such a time as they are regularly seen again. April / May / June / July / August / September / October 2007 WINDMILL PRIDE = 8 6 ADULT FEMALES Location: EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD There were no sightings of the Windmill Pride during this report period. March 2007 WINDMILL PRIDE = 8 6 ADULT FEMALES Location: EASTERNCHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD There were no sightings of the Windmill Pride during this report period. February 2007 WINDMILL PRIDE = 8 6 ADULT FEMALES Location: EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD The Windmill Pride made a welcome return to Mala Mala after a period of more than eleven months absence. The pride was found on the morning of the twenty fourth of February, lying on top of a large rocky outcrop, referred to by rangers as Flat Rocks. There were seven lionesses with the pride, and all appeared in good health. Interestingly rangers had seen vultures to the east of the KNP break, with many tracks of lions in the area just three days previously. The tracks indicated that the lions had on several occasions headed towards the Sand River to quench their thirst. Rangers did locate two lionesses that they were unable to identify, however all indications are that they were part of the Windmill pride. One hopes that the pride will be more active on Mala Mala in the future.
