For a pride which has not been viewed in several months the windmill pride made quite a comeback. Only seen twice this month however, the first time they were viewed was while hunting buffalo near the Emsagwen water hole. They were all found on the back of an adult buffalo bull in the early morning. They were not successful but it is still a mean feat for such a ‘young’ pride in the sense that they have 5 members of their pride under 2 and a half years old. The amount of time they have spent out of Mala Mala is obvious, as when they were viewed they were seen to be more nervous than our other lion prides. This makes sense as in the parts of Kruger which they are usually found in, does not have much human exposure. One hopes that this pride will now return back to Mala Mala and offer some diversity and competition to the northern prides which so far this year have grown in number and strength.

In a fascinating turn of events the Windmill pride has returned to MalaMala with what appears an intent to stay. They have been frequenting the eastern Flockfield region, however have been very mobile searching out areas both north into the territory of the Styx and Eyrefield prides and south into Charleston, typical Charleston pride territory. This pushing of the lion territories is bound to result in some spirited encounters between rival prides in the near future. These lions have been hardened by years surviving in the KNP and are slightly thin but in remarkably good condition. The cubs all appear to be around the one-year mark and are looking to become very successful lions in their own right.
