2 SUB ADULT FEMALES 3 YEARS 6 MONTHS
1 SUB ADULT MALE 3 YEARS 3 MONTHS

EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD
(3 sightings)

Three sightings were had of the pride this month. The pride was fragmented and only six members were seen. The three young males all looked healthy and strong but it is a bit concerning that they haven’t left the pride yet. One adult female was present and the two young females were also seen. The missing adults could easily be off mating and this would make the most sense.

The only sighting of this pride during the month was up at Clarendon dam, the pride were spotted coming south towards our boundary in the morning and despite the best efforts by our northern neighbours the pride crossed into Mala Mala just after sunset. The pride attempted to hunt a herd of wildebeest in the open area but were unsuccessful, they continued south to Matshipiri dam where they drank before moving east towards the Kruger Park.

The pride was seen on a buffalo kill in the middle parts of the report period they hung around the area of Claredon until there was nothing left of the old bull before moving back into the Kruger Park. The three young males all look very healthy and are approaching the age where they need to be kicked out in order to prevent any inbreeding. This pride will be very attractive to young males looking for a pride and so let’s hope this happens in the near future so the windmill pride will continue to flourish.

At the beginning of the month all at Mala Mala had exceptional sightings of this pride. This was after they had killed an old male buffalo close to the Kruger National Park boundary. It was a stable sighting for three days as the lions feasted off the kill. For the remainder of the month however they were seen infrequently. In fact the only other sighting of them was during the middle of the month where they were seen to be very nervous. This was after they had an encounter with three young males who are coming into the area. Last month there had being high hopes of seeing them more often due to the absence of the Styx Pride, but it was not to be.

March 2009

WINDMILL PRIDE = 7

2 ADULT FEMALES                                                        AGE UNKNOWN
2 SUB ADULT MALES                                                   2 YEARS 9 MONTHS
2 SUB ADULT FEMALES                                              2 YEARS 9 MONTHS
1 MALE CUB                                                                   2 YEARS 6 MONTH

Location: EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD
(2 sightings)

There were two sightings of this pride during March. Both sightings were for only an afternoon as the pride moved through the area, they still remain cautious of vehicles and don’t enjoy too much attention. The males grow in stature and mane every month and the whole pride looks in very good condition. Hopefully in the future a male will come to dominate this pride and bring some stability and territory to the pride.

Febuary 2009

WINDMILL PRIDE = 7

2 ADULT FEMALES                                                       AGE UNKNOWN
2 SUB ADULT MALES                                                  2 YEARS 8 MONTHS
2 SUB ADULT FEMALES                                              2 YEARS 8 MONTHS
1 MALE CUB                                                                   2 YEARS 5 MONTH

Location: EASTERN CHARLESTON, EASTERN FLOCKFIELD
(2 sightings)

There were two sightings of this pride this month both times close to the windmill area. The pride still remains at seven members with two of the adult females missing. The young males are now approaching the time when they will need to be pushed out of the pride in order that they don’t inbreed with their mothers and sisters. It would be interesting to watch the developments of this pride as the youngsters grow up hopefully they will return to mala mala more frequently in the future.

January 2008

These lions were seen way out of their territory this month. Something had pushed them far west ad they were seen at the banks of the Sand River near Charleston North. They were seen chasing some animals around but were unsuccessful catching anything. One only wonders why they were pushed so far westward. Nevertheless, they moved back east and crossed our border into the Kruger near their original territory, the Windmill.
