Mashatu Game Reserve received a staggering rainfall of 124mm on the morning of 30 September, transforming the stark open plains into carpets of lush green. From the ranger's diary "..we found the Majale Pride of Lions at the Vlei. It looks completely different to what it did yesterday.....water all around, just beautiful! We saw baboons, eland, giraffe, jackal, steenbok, warthog, wildebeest and zebra. All of the animals looked different - cleaner, washed and with more saturated colours"......read more

Winter is upon us, our days are shorter and evenings bitterly cold. But in true African fashion, the sun continues to shine brightly, and the animals are as active as ever.

Travel to South Africa remains buoyant with record arrivals. While our natural attractions, friendly people and cultural heritage continue to beckon the international traveler, the nature of the traveler seems to be shifting. The advent of family travel is fast usurping the theme of “spa and wellness” in the popularity stakes. In fact, a vast seasonal shift is evidence of this fact! Where June, July and August were traditionally low season periods within Southern Africa, they have become some of the busiest months – co-inciding with European and American summer holidays. As 2007 lies in wait just below our horizon, we find ourselves (all too soon) reflecting on the year past.
We have had an exceptional 2006. Game viewing remains our speciality. Our visitors have experienced a total of 3784 lions in 990 sightings, 1777 leopards in 1501 sightings, 1404 buffalo sightings (some herds in excess of 500), 2002 elephant sightings, and 3818 rhinos in 1969 sightings. Our wildlife has provided the content of two international award-winning wildlife documentaries produced by Kim Wolhuter – Predators at War, and Hyena Queen. MalaMala was again voted as one of the top hotels in Africa & the Middle East by readers of the Travel and Leisure Magazine. We are proud that after 42 years, we are still able to deliver on our promise of offering the ultimate wildlife experience on the African sub-continent...
