“I’m proud that MalaMala, which we’ve owned since 1964, has also spawned a legacy of sister reserves: the acclaimed Rattray properties, which feature a number of ‘firsts’. Whereas MalaMala is South Africa’s first and largest private Big Five reserve, Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana is southern Africa’s largest, while Mount Anderson Ranch in northern South Africa was the first private water catchment reserve to be established in our beautiful country.

I am humbled when I think back on MalaMala’s heady origins and then of the Rattray legacy many years hence. Not so much that our destinations will continue to fortify their reputation as international safari icons but that my wife Norma and I are so blessed to still live and work here after five decades, maintaining the environmental integrity of our little piece of Africa

We look forward to welcoming you at the Rattray destinations! “

Michael Rattray, CEO/Owner, The Rattray Group of Properties

Mashatu Game Reserve - www.mashatu.com

Situated at the confluence of three countries, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana and bordered by the mighty Limpopo and Shashe rivers is the Northern Tuli Game Reserve of Botswana. Herein lies Mashatu, the largest privately owned game reserve in Southern Africa. Mopane veld and open acacia savannah stretch southwards to the thick riverine vegetation of “the great, grey, green Limpopo River, all set about with Fever Trees” (Rudyard Kipling)

Mashatu, known as the "Land of the Giants”, is home to seven of Africa's giants - the baobab; the eland; the ostrich; the Kori Bustard; the giraffe; the Limpopo River and the mighty elephant. Mashatu provides refuge for the largest herd of Elephant on private land in Africa today.

Interwoven with this natural tapestry are reminders of man's presence in ancient times. Black eagles nest at the Motlouse ruins, the remains of an ancient civilisation thought to be connected to the dynasty of Monomatapa.

Mount Anderson Ranch - www.mountanderson.com

Rated as one of the top “Hideaways" in the world, Mount Anderson Ranch, a water conservancy since 1990, is situated at altitudes of over 7 500 feet, above the town of Sabie and west of the world famous Kruger National Park. The 8 000 hectare (20 000 acre) Mount Anderson Ranch provides protection to the rainfall catchments of three of the major rivers that flow into The Kruger National Park.

Indigenous high altitude wildlife is found in the mountains whilst some of the finest high altitude trout fishing in Africa is available in the valleys. Walks, horse safaris, mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting or just simply relaxing - an activity exists for all temperaments.

The largest nugget of gold (5½ pounds) ever found in South Africa was on Golden Hill, in the heart of Mount Anderson Ranch. The remains of extensive gold mining on the property by our forefathers makes for a fascinating historical tour.

Only accommodating 6 guests at Golden Cottage, Mount Anderson combines solitude, exclusivity and privacy. Whatever reason you choose to visit Mount Anderson Ranch one thing is for certain – the only threat to your enjoyment is the resounding silence.
