Malaria/Mosquitoes

Malaria is endemic to the Mpumalanga region of the country including MalaMala Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park. We are on the edge of the Malaria belt, thus although very uncommon, we are in a malaria area. We don’t believe that we have ever had a guest who contracted Malaria whilst at MalaMala Game Reserve. Notwithstanding this, in the interests of your personal safety we recommend that precautions be taken.

We are very proactive in respect of the measures we put in place to control mosquitoes within the camp.

Every month we spray K-Othrin around all our buildings and thatch. This is a spray designed specifically to deter mosquitoes and is used across Africa as a prevention for malaria by both government and the private sector. It is recommended to be used twice a year, but we spray every month.

All stagnant water in and around camp, as well as still ponds in the river, are sprayed and treated with Vectobac (a natural chemical which kills mosquitoes in their pupa stage of life which takes place in the water). Once again this is recommended every two months but we do it monthly.

Once a week every room will be doom fogged. This is to control all insects, including mosquitoes, and is done inside the room.

Twice a week we swing fog, which is a machine which blows out "chemical fog" for the prevention of mosquitoes. This is done in the afternoon when guests are on their evening drive. It is recommended that this is done weekly, but we do it twice a week.

Peaceful sleep repellent is available in all rooms and on game drive vehicles.

Please consult your physician for further information on the various anti-malarial prophylactics available.
For additional information on the malaria situation in this region, you can also contact the Kruger National Park malaria hotline on + 27 (0) 82 – 234 1800 or visit the website http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/faq.htm
